National Museum Wales Amgeuddfa Cymru
To create an immersive digital experience to bring the collections of the museum to life.
The National Museum of Wales wanted to explore how digital media can be used to interpret and enhance their collections and commissioned us to create a multimedia experience for visitors to hire to explore three of their galleries.
Augmented reality (AR) is a great way to enhance museum collections; rather than distracting from the artefacts on display, it helps to tell a wider story around the objects, giving them more context and also injecting some fun to the visitor experience. Traditional AR has its limitations within museum environments, requiring either the placement of an image to trigger content or for visitors to place content in a scene themselves.
We have created a ground-breaking new Augmented Reality (AR) immersive experience which combines area learning with AR, bringing a whole new dimension to the visitor experience.
Museum ExplorAR is programmed to know exactly where the user is standing within the exhibition space and can trigger virtual content to appear as visitors approach a painting or specimen.
Visitors can see dinosaurs appear on their skeletal remains, watch the impressionist gallery transform into Monet’s waterlily garden, even walk beneath sharks and whales!
The Impressionist gallery has been transformed into Monet’s waterlily garden, complete with Japanese bridge and Monet himself. Visitors can also meet Gwendoline and Margaret Davies, the pioneering sisters who bequeathed their remarkable collections to the Museum.
In the Evolution of Wales Gallery visitors can see an Edmontosaurus appear upon it’s skeletal remains, watch a Megalosaurus roaming the arid planes of Penarth 200 million years ago, and walk beneath the Jurassic sea creatures that once swam in the tropical seas above South Wales.
The Marine Gallery experience plunges visitors into the wonderful world beneath our oceans with whales, sharks, a manatee and many other ocean creatures; there’s even a giant clam!
“We are utterly delighted with the experiences that Jam have created for us, they have delivered innovation that has created great excitement here.”
